BEST PICTURE

PREDICTION: La La Land

SPOILER: Moonlight

La La Land has encountered some recent backlash as most frontrunners do when there is a clear favorite, but with a record-tying 14 nominations- La La Land has this in the bag.

BEST DIRECTOR

PREDICTION: Damien Chazelle – La La Land

SPOILER: Barry Jenkins- Moonlight

Damien Chazelle will break the 85-year old record and become the youngest Best Director winner ever!

BEST ACTOR

PREDICTION: Casey Affleck

SPOILER: Denzel Washington

This is the race of the night. Smart money is on Denzel who won SAG. I’m sticking with Casey because he’s won literally everything else and he’s in the better/more liked film.

BEST ACTRESS

PREDICTION: Emma Stone

SPOILER: Isabelle Huppert

My gut tells me go with Huppert since she is so well respected. But Emma has been racking up the prizes this season and they usually go with the ingenue for Best Actress.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

PREDICTION: Mahershala Ali

SPOILER: Dev Patel

Dev just won the BAFTA which could be a major telling point of who will win. I’m sticking with Ali because he’s in one of the most liked films of the year and his SAG speech helped him.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

PREDICTION: Viola Davis

SPOILER: None

She should’ve in lead and probably would’ve won but she’ll definitely win here. No question.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

PREDICTION: Manchester by the Sea

SPOILER: La La Land

This has been back and forth between these two films all season. However the Academy rarely rewards musicals for their scripts and Manchester is the better of the two.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

PREDICTION: Moonlight

SPOILER: Arrival

Nobody stands a chance against Moonlight- which beat both Manchester and La La at the WGA where it was considered an original script.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

PREDICTION: Zootopia

SPOILER: Kubo and the Two Strings

Kubo has made a last minute push in their campaign and it helped them win BAFTA. However, it may be too late. Especially with Zootopia’s resonance in today’s political climate.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

PREDICTION: OJ: Made in America

SPOILER: I Am Not Your Negro

OJ may experience backlash because it’s an 8-hour film that was first broadcast on TV. But it’s a masterpiece and has been sweeping all the award this season, it should win here.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

PREDICTION: La La Land

SPOILER: Lion

Lion won at the Cinematographers guild. However, I think this category may factor in the La La Land sweep because of its long shots and bright colors.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

PREDICTION: Jackie

SPOILER: La La Land

La La Land won at the Costume Designer’s Guild and Jackie didn’t. They have not rewarded a contemporary film at the Oscars for costumes since Priscilla Queen of the Desert in the early 90’s and that was for elaborate drag costumes. You have to go all the way back to the 60’s with Who’s afraid of Virginia Wolfe to find another contemporary movie that won the costume award.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

PREDICTION: La La Land

SPOILER: Arrival

This is a tough category to predict because they’ve been known to go in various ways. La la La won the Guild award, in picking it.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

PREDICTION: The Salesman

SPOILER: Toni Erdmann

Toni Erdmann was it front most of the season and then Trump’s Muslim ban was put in place and the Iranian director of the Salesman said who could not attend. This is a category where politics will win and The Salesman probably will get it to send a message.

BEST MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING

PREDICTION: Star Trek Beyond

SPOILER: A Man Called Ove

What a terrible category. Star Trek won for the first film, it’ll probably win again.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

PREDICTION: La La Land

SPOILER: None

An original musical? Nobody can compete in this category against La La Land.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

PREDICTION: City of Stars

SPOILER: How Far I’ll Go

The only way City of Stars doesn’t win is if it splits votes with the other La La Land song. Then Lin Manuel Miranda may sneak in.

BEST FILM EDITING

PREDICTION: La La Land

SPOILER: Arrival

Tom Cross won this for working with Damien Chazelle last time on Whiplash. It has the flashiest of the editing which usually wins.

BEST SOUND EDITING

PREDICTION: Hacksaw Ridge

SPOILER: La La Land

This category usually goes to the loudest movie- especially war movies. Only way Hacksaw doesn’t win is if voters don’t know the difference in sound and just mark both for La La Land.

BEST SOUND MIXING

PREDICTION: La La Land

SPOILER: Hacksaw Ridge

Musicals/ Movies about music always win sound mixing (Whiplash, Les Mis, Dreamgirls, Chicago)

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

PREDICTION: The Jungle Book

SPOILER: Rogue One

Jungle Book was done by the same people as Titanic, Avatar, Hugo… They won the Guild as well.

BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT

PREDICTION: Sing

SPOILER: Silent Nights

BEST ANIMATED SHORT

PREDICTION: Piper

SPOILER: Pearl

BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT

PREDICTION: The White Helmets

SPOILER: Watani: My Homeland
