Predictions for The 23rd Annual SAG Awards

I can’t remember a SAG Awards in recent memory that has been harder to predict. There are so many acting races that are up in the air and SAG could easily clear some of them up or make them even more confusing.

Lets get into it…

Best Film Ensemble

PREDICTION: Fences

SPOILER: Moonlight

Moonlight is the clear front runner here, or so many pundits think. I can’t help but think that all of the showy performances in Fences will resonate more with SAG voters than the multiple people performing the same part in Moonlight. The other big contest here is Hidden Figures. SAG is a very large voting body, and Hidden Figures could benefit from being the Number 1 movie in america during voting.

Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Film

PREDICTION: Emma Stone – La La Land

SPOILER: Natalie Portman – Jackie

I can’t help but think that Emma Stone’s performance as a struggling actor will probably resonate more with the SAG voting body than the transformative performance of Natalie Portman.

Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role in a Film

PREDICTION: Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea

SPOILER: Denzel Washington – Fences

Casey is winning everything so I’m feeling that the momentum continues here. The only reason for an upset here is that Denzel has never won a SAG Award but I don’t think most voters know that statistic. They also have the chance to vote for him in ensemble.

Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Film

PREDICTION: Viola Davis- Fences

SPOILER: None

If there’s only one lock tonight, it’s probably this category.

Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Film

PREDICTION: Mahershala Ali – Moonlight

SPOILER: Jeff Bridges – Hell or High Water

If Mahershala loses this tonight it will be a very up in the air category at Oscars. He had all the momentum before the Globes, but that loss doesn’t look good.

Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama

PREDICTION: Downton Abbey

SPOILER: Stranger Things

Downton Abbey has one this category three times in the past couple years in a shocker each year. This year I’ll just give and go for it.

Best Performance by Ensemble in a Comedy Series

PREDICTION: Orange is the New Black

SPOILER: Veep

While I think OITNB would be a ridiculous win, it miraculously pulled it off last year and I can’t help but feel it may do it again.

Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series

PREDICTION: Millie Bobbie Brown – Stranger Things

SPOILER: Thandie Newton- Westworld

I can’t help but think that most of the love for Stranger Things is behind Millie and that SAG will reward her where others won’t. Thandie, however, was the breakout of the falls newest show so it fate could be on her side.

Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series

PREDICTION: Kevin Spacey – House of Cards

SPOILER: Rami Malek – Mr. Robot

Rami seems like the obvious choice but considering they went for Spacey last year when Rami was in his best season, I think they’ll keep with tradition.

Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series

PREDICTION: Uzo Aduba – OITNB

SPOILER: Julia Louis- Dreyfus – Veep

Fir some reason SAG keeps awarding Uzo in this category. She’s great but is she the most deserving? Absolutely not. Still going to pick her because they’ve gone with her in worse years.

Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series

PREDICTION: Jeffrey Tambor – Transparent

SPOILER: William H. Macy – Shameless

SAG tends to go with the same actor if he’s winning most awards year after year. I can’t see much competition for Tambor in this category.

Best Performance by a Female Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries

PREDICTION: Sarah Paulson – The People

vs. OJ

SPOILER: None

Girl has won every award for this role. She won’t lose.

Best Performance by a Male Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries

PREDICTION: Courtney B. Vance – The People vs OJ

SPOILER: Sterling K. Brown – The People vs OJ

They may cancel each other out but I can’t see SAG being the only voting body that doesn’t give OJ multiple awards.
