Predictions for The 2017 Golden Globe Awards

It’s that time of year again!!! The Golden Globes are the first big award show of the year and have the power to drastically change the awards race for better or for worse. Some of these categories are incredibly difficult to call this year. But just remember when making predictions: the HFPA is made up of about 90 foreign journalists and most of the time celebrities win over best performances (Lady Gaga *cough cough*)

Here are my predictions for tonight! Enjoy!

Film Categories

Best Motion Picture – Drama

Hacksaw Ridge

Hell or High Water

Lion

Manchester by the Sea

Moonlight

img_6497

PREDICTION: Manchester by the Sea

I feel like Manchester is a safe bet here, but look  out for Moonlight. With La La Land out of the way in this category, the two are going head to head. But wouldn’t it be just like the HFPA to give a Hacksaw Ridge surprise?

Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical

20th Century Women

Deadpool

Florence Foster Jenkins

La La Land

Sing Street

img_6496

PREDICTION: La La Land

La La pretty much has this locked up. That would be the biggest upset of the night since none of these other films are even competitive in the race.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama

Amy Adams- Arrival

Jessica Chastain – Miss Sloane

Isabelle Huppert – Elle

Ruth Negga – Loving

Natalie Portman – Jackie

img_6498

PREDICTION: Natalie Portman – Jackie

Natalie has this in the bag. Closest possible upset would be Adams because the HFPA loved her- but don’t count on it.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea

Joel Edgerton – Loving

Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge

Viggo Mortenson – Captain Fantastic

Denzel Washington – Fences

img_6511

PREDICTION: Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea

This is going to be a very tough category. Casey has the momentum right now but we’ll soon find out if that was just Critics momentum or if he’ll ride it all the way to Oscar. Denzel is his biggest threat and normally I would go for him since the HFPA loves huge movie stars. But he just one the Cecil B. Demille Award last year from them and they didn’t like Fences enough to nominate it for Picture or Screenplay. I may regret this decision though…

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Annette Bening – 20th Century Women

Lily Collins – Rules Don’t Apply

Hailee Steinfeld – Edge of Seventeen

Emma Stone – La La Land

Meryl Streep – Florence Foster Jenkins

img_6512

PREDICTION: Emma Stone – La La Land

Maby are thinking there will be a La La Land sweep tonight. I don’t buy it. They haven’t given a movie more than 3 awards in the past 5 years. The last movie to receive 5 was in the 1970’s. However, I think Emma Stone will be one of the people riding the La La wave since her other competitors look weak in the Oscar race.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Colin Farrell – The Lobster

Ryan Gosling – La La Land

Hugh Grant – Florence Foster Jenkins

Jonah Hill – War Dogs

Ryan Reynolds – Deadpool

img_6513

PREDICTION: Ryan Gosling – La La Land

I hate this category. The war of the Ryan’s (and Hugh.) I’ve been going back and forth with this category. Gosling seems like the sure thing and he’ll get the Oscar nomination, but is this where they try to spread the wealth and not give La La everything? Reynolds is having the best year yet and maybe they want him on their stage. However, that’s also what I thought with Amy Schumer last year and they still went with Jennifer Lawrence. The main reason I’m going with Gosling is this is his fifth nomination at the Globes and he’s never won- he’s due.

Best Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture

Naomie Harris – Moonlight

Nicole Kidman – Lion

Octavia Spencer – Hidden Figures

Michelle Williams – Manchester by the Sea

Viola Davis – Fences

img_6106

PREDICTION: Viola Davis – Fences

Viola will continue to ride the wave all the way to the Oscar stage. And she still has never won a Globe!!!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Mahershala Ali – Moonlight

Jeff Bridges – Hell or High Water

Simon Helberg – Florence Foster Jenkins

Dev Patel – Lion

Aaron Taylor-Johnson – Nocturnal Animals

img_6492

PREDICTION: Mahershala Ali – Moonlight

I’ll start this by saying a think this prediction is wrong. I think the Globes may go with Bridges or Patel so they share the wealth here. And Moonlight might just be a Critics darling. However, sometimes the Globes want to be a part of the bandwagon and award the person who they think will take the Oscar as well. Ughhhhh… I may change this.

Best Director – Motion Picture

Damien Chazelle – La La Land

Tom Ford – Nocturnal Animals

Mel Gibson – Hacksaw Ridge

Barry Jenkins – Moonlight

Kenneth Lonergan – Manchester by the Sea

IMG_6514.PNG

PREDICTION: Mel Gibson – Hacksaw Ridge

Here’s where I go out in a limb. The Globes love movie stars and we know they forgave Gibson a while ago because they continue to have him on their show. I think they make up for all the Ricky Gervais jokes and hard times that Gibson endured (deservedly so) tonight. I also think this will be a place where they won’t reward La La because they can’t give it everything, but it would be the other big contender here.

Best Screenplay – Motion Picture

Damien Chazelle – La La Land

Tom Ford – Nocturnal Animals

Barry Jenkins – Moonlight

Kenneth Lonergan – Manchester by the Sea

Taylor Sheridan – Hell or High Water

IMG_6515.PNG

PREDICTION: Kenneth Lonergan – Manchester by the Sea

Is this how the Globes choose to reward Tom Ford, who’s film they clearly liked a lot to give it multiple nominations. And he is the celebrity in this group. I’m going with the safe bet of Lonergan who is sweeping these screenplay awards.

Best Motion Picture – Animated

My Life as a Zucchini

Moana

Sing

Zootopia

Kubo and the Two Strings

img_6490

PREDICTION: Zootopia

Zootopia is the best of the group and will sweep straight through to Oscar.

Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language

Divines (France)

Elle (France)

Neruda (Chile)

The Salesman (Iran/France)

Toni Erdmann (Germany)

img_6488

PREDICTION: Elle

This is a race between Elle and Toni Erdmann, and Elle didn’t make the shortlist for the Foreign Language Oscar. However, they gave Isabelle Huppert the actress nomination so I think that gives Elle the edge here. Toni Erdmann is the Oscar front runner though, so don’t count it out.

Best Original Score – Motion Picture

Nicholas Brittell – Moonlight

Justin Hurwitz – La La Land

Johann Johansson – Arrival

Dustin O’Hollaran/Hauschka – Lion

Hans Zimmer/Pharrell Williams/Benjamin Wallfisch – Hidden Figures

IMG_6516.PNG

PREDICTION: Justin Hurwitz – La La Land

La La Land will get at least one music award and think this will be it. Maybe they go with Hidden Figures if they want Pharrell on their stage.

Best Original Song – Motion Picture

Can’t Stop the Feeling! – Trolls

City of Stars – La La Land

Faith – Sing

Gold – Gold

How Far I’ll Go – Moana

IMG_6517.PNG

PREDICTION: How Far I’ll Go- Moana

I don’t buy that they give both music awards to La La Land. This category is always weird for them because usually they just go for biggest celebrity over best song – which would mean Justin Timberlake. But I’m betting they want Lin Manuel Miranda to make a speech on the Globes stage.

Television Categories

Best Television Series – Drama

PREDICTION: The Crown

The Globes love reward new shows and The Crown is a prime example of the type of TV they love.

Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy

PREDICTION: Atlanta

Again, it’s the new hot show that they love to be first to reward.

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

PREDICTION: The People vs. OJ Simpson

This is almost the last awards show to reward this limited series that has swept everywhere. No competition.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

PREDICTION: Sarah Paulson – The People vs. OJ Simpson

This is her award. Everybody else back off!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

PREDICTION: Tom Hiddleston- The Night Manager

Im going on a limb and not going for Courtney B. Vance even though he is the favorite. OJ won’t win all it’s Categories and Tom is the movie star of this group. Look out for Riz Ahmed as well since he was just in Star Wars but I think The Night Of guys cancel each other out.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama

PREDICTION: Winona Ryder – Stranger Things

I think they give the show something and this seems like the obvious bet. Look out for Claire Foy though…

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama

PREDICTION: Rami Malek – Mr. Robot

He lost in a shock to Jon Hamm last year and then won the Emmy this year. I think they will make up for that.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical

PREDICTION: Issa Rae – Insecure

They tend to go with the hot new star in this category (ala Rachel Bloom) last year. That and they have to reward HBO somewhere…

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical

PREDICTION: Donald Glover – Atlanta

If a show wins Best Drama or Best Comedy they usually pair it up with at least one acting award at the Globes. Donald seems like a shoo-in.

Best Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television

PREDICTION: Thandie Newton- Westworld

Shes the best part of the hottest new show on TV since Game of Thrones. Think the This Is Us girls cancel each other out.

Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television

PREDICTION: John Lithgow – The Crown

Again, Best Drama usually comes with at least one acting award and John Lithgow steals the show in The Crown.

That’s it! Happy Golden Globes!!
