1st post of the ’16/’17 Awards Season: Critics Choice Awards Predictions

While the awards season began at the same time it normally does every year, this year, the actual award shows are starting extremely early. The Critics Choice Awards moved their show up by over a month just to ensure that they were the first show this year and it’s absolutely ridiculous.

The nominations for this show were only released about a week and a half ago, giving their voting body a short period of time to actual review all the categories and submit their ballots. The Critics Choice are trying to position themselves as the new Golden Globe Awards but have a couple major problems in their path.

First of all, the show is broadcast on A&E- a network most people forget even exists. Secondly, moving the show up to the middle of the holiday season puts it in competition with the other million things that are happening in people’s lives at this time of year. When they are in January, after everybody has calmed down from the holiday festivities, they were much more likely to gain a wider audience. And lastely, while their voting body is more admired than the HFPA who puts on the Globes within the community (let’s be honest the HFPA are 82 random voters who can be bought at any time), the BFCA hasn’t been able to put on the same type of quality show that the Globes are able to achieve and by moving the date around and doing TV and film separately some years and combined others- there’s just no consistency.

ANYWAY, I digress… this has already been an amazing year for film! SO much better than last year in my opinion. These awards tend to be a pretty good precursors for the Oscars, but seeing as 25% of their voting body recently resigned over controversy… we’ll see how good they are this year.

Which also makes these a little harder to predict. Not to mention there are so many worthy films and performances this year! But here I go…
