These nominations are probably the weirdest and most off this entire season. The SAG Awards wants to make sure their nominations are ahead of everybody so they announce the day before the Golden Globes announce their nominations. But in doing this, there are clearly some major discrepancies from every other awards show this year, making this extremely difficult to predict.
Was there a reason they wanted to get the nominations out early? Probably not, besides the pride that says they were first. The awards show is almost a complete month after the Globes. Oh well, now we go about the difficult task of seeing what will break through tonight. The Guild awards are the most important leading up to Oscar because they’re the real reflection of how actual people working in Hollywood and in these respective field actual feel about the nominees. Whereas the Globes and Critics’ Choice aren’t as important because those are people who aren’t actually voting at the end of February.
While the SAG/ AFTRA body is going to be closer correlated to the outcome in February for Oscar, it’s also important to remember that the body voting for the show tonight is much, much larger than those who vote for Oscar… and tastes can very…
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
Prediction: The Big Short
Spotlight vs. The Big Short
To put it simply, if The Big Short wins this tonight, it wins Best Picture at the Oscars. The End. It’s a big night.
The PGA win last week was the first real indication of what the actual filmmakers thought about this race and PGA has correctly predicted most Best Picture winners during it’s time on the scene. The Social Network was the frontrunner until The King’s Speech won the PGA… Boyhood was the frontrunner until Birdman won the PGA.
Spotlight has a real chance here tonight because it really as an actor’s film and it’s an incredible ensemble. BUT if the momentum for The Big Short continues…
Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture
Prediction: Leonardo DiCaprio
The Leo train should keep chugging along tonight…
Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture
Prediction: Brie Larson
There have been multiple chances for any of the other actresses in this category to derail Brie Larson to her Oscar victory. But only three of the five Oscar nominees are actually nominated here, so it’s looking good. If she wins tonight… Oscar is hers.
Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Prediction: Jacob Trembley
I’m taking a risk here. Sylvester Stallone, the frontrunner for Oscar, isn’t even nominated here. My gut says go with Mark Rylance or Christian Bale, but this was one of the only award shows that actually nominated Trembley for his outstanding work, so I’m gonna take a risk cuz this is an open field. AND it would be the best moment of the night!
Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Prediction: Alicia Vikander
We have another open field. Two of these actresses are the leads of their film and because of that category fraud, have the edge here since they have more screen time. Vikander has the showier performances that actors tend to vote for, while Mara has a much more subdued, contained performance. This is a huge Oscar showdown and what happens tonight could mean a lot. #teamvikander
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
Prediction: Game of Thrones
Downton Abbey has had a lot of good luck in this category and it’s a true actor’s ensemble. But I think Game of Thrones is going to continue with it’s Emmy good luck.
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
Transparent could give Veep a run for it’s money, but Veep seems to be the more popular contender.
Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama Series
Prediction: Jon Hamm
This would be following the Emmy and Golden Globe trend of finally rewarding him for the show’s final season.
Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Drama Series
Prediction: Viola Davis
She gives the showiest of all the actresses in this category. Actors love when you chew the scenery.
Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Comedy Series
Prediction: Jeffrey Tambor
This should be another easy win for Tambor.
Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Comedy Series
Prediction: Julia Louis-Dreyfus
This is a tough category because Dreyfus seems like the frontrunner but I can imagine almost any of the other nominees breaking through. I’m sticking with the safe bet.
Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
Prediction: Idris Elba
I hope I’m not kicking myself for not picking Mark Rylance here, but Idris Elba seems to give the bigger, more popular performance.
Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Television Movie or Miniseries
Prediction: Queen Latifah
Nicole Kidman could steal this simply cuz she’s a movie star in a shitty role… other than that this is a really weak category and Queen should take it easily.
Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
Prediction: Mad Max: Fury Road
Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series
Prediction: Game of Thrones
